Punjabi is
a vibrant language having its deep roots in Punjab, the land
of five rivers in India. Many great
religious movements grew in the fertile plains and
enriched Punjabi. Over different periods of history,
Punjab has seen its boundaries expand and shrink but
Punjabi broadened its horizon and now it is a well known
language not only rich in folk
literature but also in the field of commerce and
entertainment. It is spoken in India, Pakistan,
Bangladesh, Nepal & Bhutan. Punjabis, particularly
Sikhs have powerful presence in USA,
UK, Canada, France and other countries. Punjabi is
written in Gurmukhi and Persian-arabic script. It has
been kept alive by Gurus & Sufis (Holy Teachers). Guru-mukhi literally means
language from the mouth of the reverend teacher
. More than Sixty million people speak Punjabi.
It is more prominent in the main land of Punjab & is
the official language of the State. It is also spoken in
other states e.g. Bihar, Delhi, Haryana, Himachal
Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh,
Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.
